'I'm well and truly done' - David Warner confirms international retirement after T20 World Cup 2024

Star Australia batter David Warner confirmed his retirement from T20Is on Tuesday, February 13 after the T20 World Cup 2024 scheduled to be played in the West Indies and USA from June 01. Notably, Warner already announced his retirement from Tests and ODIs earlier this year and made a decision to bid adieu to the shortest format following the third T20I against West Indies in Perth.

The Australian opener was the lone warrior for the hosts in the third T20I scoring a brilliant 81 off 49 balls, however, it wasn’t enough to help his side chase down 221. The 37-year-old was also adjudged the Player of the series being the highest run scorer in the three-match affair with 173 runs to his name from three innings.

Speaking about his future plans after winning the Player of the Series award, the opening batter revealed that he’s ‘well and truly done’ and is happy to leave the opening spot for youngsters after the World Cup.

"It was good to have a break and play the franchise stuff. I've got a lot of time off after the New Zealand series, go to the IPL before we embark on a World Cup in the Caribbean. Was quite surprised an opening bowler 145kph and swings it not trying to get me out. Go the Caribbean, the boundaries aren't too big there. I'm well and truly done, it's time for the youngsters to come through and show their talent,” said Warner at the post-match press conference.

Earlier in the first T20I, he played a brilliant knock of 70 (36) smashing 12 fours and a six as Australia won the game by 11 runs. During the series opener, the southpaw also became just the third batter in the history of the game to play 100 matches across all three formats.

Warner is the second-highest run scorer for Australia in T20Is with 3067 runs to his name from 102 innings at an average of 33.70 and a strike rate of 142.51 with one hundred and 26 fifties. He’s just 53 runs away from surpassing Aaron Finch’s tally of 3120 and becoming the most prolific batter for Australia in the shortest format of international cricket.

Notably, Warner was awarded the Player of the Tournament in the 2021 T20 World Cup finishing as the second-highest run scorer of the tournament with 289 runs from seven innings. He will be eager to end his career on a similar note helping Australia lift their second title of the format.

Meanwhile, Australia will next take on New Zealand in a three-match T20I series beginning from Wednesday, February 21 which will also be their last series ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024.
