Opening has been plaguing India in the ongoing T20 World Cup. In three matches so far, the pair of Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul has managed to score only 41 runs and thus, it has put pressure on the middle order.

Even though Rohit managed to score runs against the Netherlands in their second match, Rahul is yet to come to the party. In three matches, the 30-year-old has only scored 22 runs and is, therefore, being heavily criticised on social media.

His position in the starting XI is being questioned but India Head Coach Rahul Dravid is not ready to drop the talisman batter. Before taking on Bangladesh on Wednesday, November 2, Dravid clearly mentioned of backing the opener despite his rough patch in the pre-match press conference.

“In words and actions, we have shown full support for KL Rahul,” said Dravid as tweeted by PTI journalist Kushan Sarkar.

“KL Rahul is a fantastic player, we are confident that he will come back strongly, these conditions has been challenging for the openers in this world. Me and Rohit don't have absolutely no doubt who will open, I know how much impact KL Rahul can make,” the coach further added in the press conference.

Have to play well if we have to win the T20 World Cup: Dravid

The former India captain also acknowledged that the team made some mistake in their game against South Africa. Other than Suryakumar Yadav, the batters failed to live up to the expectations and fielding was very sloppy too. Dravid thus believes that the team needs to improve in order to win their second T20 World Cup.

“Have to play well if we have to do that (win the World Cup). We made mistakes in the last game (vs SA in Perth),” said the 49-year-old as tweeted by journalist Vikrant Gupta.

Dravid also shared an update on Dinesh Karthik, who suffered an injury in the last match. The wicketkeeper-batter hurt his finger in the last match and thus, his availability is now a matter of question. Sharing an update on Karthik, the former India international said that the 37-year-old is recovering well and a decision will be taken on the match day.

“Dinesh Karthik is coming pretty well, he has reached for the training, we will take a call tomorrow morning,” Dravid said in the press conference.
