IND vs AUS 2023: Suryakumar Yadav falls prey to Nathan Lyon on his Test debut
Skipper Rohit Sharma continues to lead from the front as the Australians are still yet to find a solution for him
After a sub-par performance with the bat on the first day of the Test in Nagpur, the Aussies seem to be fighting back with the ball. Team India got off to a good start with the bat as skipper Rohit Sharma led from the front and scored a century as Australia tries to find a solution.
After the dismissal of Virat Kohli, Test debutant, Suryakumar Yadav, came in to bat, but the 32-year-old’s debut was a short lived one as he fell to Nathan Lyon after scoring a mere 8 runs. Lyon got his first wicket of the match, and the second bowler from the squad to take a wicket was debutant Todd Murphy, who has been sensational.
Lyon’s delivery to Surya turned in sharply, and Surya was a little early on the front foot to defend it. The ball sneaked through the gates as he was bowled out. Many had expectations from Surya as he has been sensational in white-ball cricket.
Suryakumar Yadav finally got his chance
There was much speculation about the playing XI that India would field against Australia prior to the start of the first Test. The 23-year-old, Shubman Gill, was backed my many veteran cricketers to open the batting alongside skipper Rohit Sharma, as KL Rahul could bat in the middle order.
However, India went ahead with the 32-year-old, Suryakumar Yadav, in the middle order while KL Rahul as the opener alongside Rohit Sharma, and dropped the in-form opener, Shubman Gill. Both decisions did not appear to be successful, as KL Rahul was dismissed for 20 runs and Suryakumar was dismissed for 8.
Many legends of the game, like Sachin Tendulkar and Ajay Jadeja, backed the selection of Surya in the playing XI; and the latter also opined that the 32-year-old has been given what his due by getting selected. Tendulkar, on the other hand, stated that Surya looks perfectly equipped to play Test cricket as well.
