IND vs BAN 2024: India vs Bangladesh, 2nd Test - Who Said What?

Team India managed to pull off a heist in Kanpur against Bangladesh. Both sides were squaring off against each other at the renowned Green Park Stadium. Notably, the clash was mostly a rain-marred affair which began on September 27. The home side invited the visitors to bat first after winning the toss. 

On Day 1, Bangladesh batted for 35 overs before bad light led to the day being called off. At that stage, the visitors posted a total of 107 runs with the loss of three wickets. Following the opening day, no play was possible on days 2 and 3, respectively, due to incessant rain and the wet outfield. 

Finally, on Day 4, the rain gods showed some mercy and the Indian team put in a good showing with the ball to limit the visitors on a sunny day. Mominul Haque remained unbeaten on 107* runs, with Mehidy Hasan Miraz adding 20 runs on the board as Bangladesh scored 233 runs in the first innings. As for the hosts, pacer Jasprit Bumrah was the highest wicket-taker with three wickets to his name in the first innings. 

Coming out to bat on Day 4 while trailing by 233 runs, Team India showcased an attacking mindset as openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and skipper Rohit Sharma propelled India to a fiery start as Jaiswal scored 72 runs off just 51 deliveries, with Rohit adding 23 runs on the board. Furthermore, Gill added 39 runs, with Virat Kohli and KL Rahul contributing with 47 and 68 runs, respectively. As a result, in what was a bold move from the skipper and a rare case in Test history where India declared (285/3) their first innings without getting bowled out. 

As Bangladesh came out to bat in the latter stages of Day 4, the side were quickly put under pressure. On the final day, Bangladesh were bundled out for 146 runs as India chased down a meagre target of 95 runs to complete a clean sweep over the visitors to claim the Test series in a dominant manner.

1. India’s attacking mindset

One of the biggest talking points of the clash was the attacking mindset that India opted for on Day 4 of the game. After bundling Bangladesh out for a score of 233 runs in the first innings, India came out to bat and quickly scored runs and declared on the same day after posting 285 runs on the board.

2. Jasprit Bumrah’s masterclass

Ace India pacer Jasprit Bumrah was one of the best performers in the game, taking three wickets in the first and second innings, Bumrah’s spell ensured that the home side remained in the pursuit of a victory against limited time available to seal the deal for India. 

3. Mominul Haque’s resilience

India’s bowling attack had Bangladesh under pressure in the first innings. However, Mominul Haque played a brilliant knock, scoring 107* runs in 194 deliveries, to guide Bangladesh to a score of 233 runs in their first innings.

We didn't bat well... Yes, if you look at all batters, they played 30-40 balls and then got out. It's important for one batsman to get big runs. The way Ashwin and Jaddu batted, but you need to take wickets in those moments. The way we bowled both innings - I hope Mehidy continues well in next Test match.

Winning skipper, Rohit Sharma

In life, we all keep moving on and at some stage, you work with different personnel. When Rahul bhai said he was done, it was a fantastic time we had together. Then life moves on and as a team we had to move on. With Gautam Gambhir...I've played with him and what sort of mindset he has. Early days still but very fruitful. To be honest we had to think a lot to keep the game moving forward. When we came on day four, we wanted to get them out as early as possible and see what we can do with the bat. It was not about the runs we get but the overs we wanted to bowl at them. The pitch didn't have much for bowlers but to get a game out of that pitch was a great effort from the bowlers. The batters were willing to take the risk and we were ready to give ourselves a chance at a result. Look, Akash has been good and he's played a lot domestic cricket. There's enough overs in the legs and the guy can do the job the team is expecting him to do. He can bowl long spells and we want to create a bunch of bowlers who are ready to play Test cricket at any given point. If someone is injured, you should be able to replace them.

Nothing. The situation was different in Chennai and it was different here. 100% every game and every innings is important. I try my best for that and that's how I prepare. We had a chat that we need to play freely and in our mind we wanted to win the game and we were just going for it.
