Youngster Dhruv Jurel has made the headlines with his remarkable performance in the first innings of the fourth Test against England in Ranchi. His gritty knock of 90 runs has not only kept India alive in the contest but also drew high praise from former legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar.

Notably, England’s spin duo, Tom Hartley and Shoaib Bashir, wreaked havoc against the India top and middle order. However, Jurel and Kuldeep Yadav stitched a resilient 76-run partnership that brought the hosts back into the contest. The Rohit Sharma-led side was reduced to 177/7 and needed something special to come out of the trouble and Jurel and Kuldeep provided exactly that as their partnership reduced India’s deficit from 134 runs at the start of Day 3 to 46 runs by the time they were dismissed.

Meanwhile, former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar, while on commentary, drew parallels between Jurel’s game awareness and that of former India captain MS Dhoni. It was not just about his batting as Gavaskar was equally impressed with Jurel’s keeping skills. He eventually stated that the young cricketer is “another MS Dhoni in the making”.

“Of course, he has batted well, but his keeping, his work behind the stumps has been equally brilliant. Just by looking at his game awareness, I want to say that he is another MS Dhoni in the making. I know there can never be another MSD but you know the presence of mind that he has, MSD also when he started, it was that. And Jurel has that game awareness. Street-smart cricketer,” Gavaskar said on commentary.

In response to Gavaskar’s high praise, Jurel expressed his delight as he stated that it is a good feeling and explained the instructions that the team management gave him ahead of going out to bat.

“Obviously it's a good feeling to hear a legend like Sunil Gavaskar talk about me. The mood was great, there were no specific instructions... just to go out and play. Watch the ball and play. Just that the long I play the better it is,” Jurel was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.
