IND vs ENG 2025: Sanjay Bangar advices Rohit Sharma after string of poor performances
"A phase has come in his career where he hasn't scored runs," Sanjay Bangar said.
Indian skipper Rohit Sharma's difficult phase with the bat continued as he has struggled to find form across formats. In the first ODI against England in Nagpur, he managed only 2 runs off 7 deliveries before being dismissed by Saqib Mahmood. While the hosts managed a four-wicket win, Rohit’s ongoing poor form has raised concerns, especially with the upcoming Champions Trophy and a crucial Test series against England later this year.
Rohit's lean patch has been a talking point. However, former India all-rounder and batting coach Sanjay Bangar has given a piece of advice to the Indian batting stalwart. Bangar pointed out that sometimes, excessive practice might not be the solution. Instead, he believes that the opener should take some time off from the nets and focus on reflecting on his past successful innings.
“A phase has come in his career where he hasn't scored runs. Sometimes practicing too much isn't beneficial. He can probably spend a little time alone and watch the phase where he enjoyed a lot of success. Watch some videos and figure out what his habits and routines were,” Bangar said on Star Sports’ Match Point.
Bangar also warned against desperation coming into Rohit’s thought process, as it could further damage his confidence going forward. According to the former coach, the Indian opener's primary focus should be on staying relaxed and trusting his natural game
"Sometimes all those things prove hugely beneficial if you have to regain your rhythm. You have to remind yourself what works for you. He shouldn't be too desperate in his thinking," Bangar added.

It's just that he hasn't got too many runs: Deep Dasgupta
Former India wicketkeeper-batter Deep Dasgupta also gave his take on Rohit’s form, believing that confidence, rather than technique, is the issue.
"I think it's a confidence thing. He was batting alright. He was getting behind the line. He wasn't getting late. He wasn't missing the lines as such and Jofra Archer was bowling really well, and so was (Saqib) Mahmood. So I don't think there is any issue as far as technique is concerned. It's just that confidence," Dasgupta said.
He also specified that the 37-year-old might be second-guessing himself when playing his favorite shots.
"We have all been through that. When runs aren't coming, either you are early on the ball or you are late. You are second-guessing yourself, should I play that shot, should I not? The moment he starts getting out pulling or flicking, it's got to be confidence. I don't think it's technical. He is still the same batter, it's just that he hasn't got too many runs," Dasgupta added.
