India vs England 1st ODI 2025: Match Overview

Team India (IND) are clashing with England (ENG) in the second ODI of the three-match series, at the Barabati Stadium, in Cuttack, on February 09, 2025.

Toss Update: England Opt to Bat First

Lady luck smiled on England Captain Jos Buttler as the coin fell in his team's favour at the toss and opted to bat first. Meanwhile, the hosts chose to make two changes in their side. The Men in Blue have handed a much-awaited ODI debut to the mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy. While the batting stalwart and veteran Virat Kohli comes back into the side as well. Speaking of the second ODI, India will aim to win and gain an unassailable lead in the series while England will aim to bounce back for a series leveller. If that happens then it would mean that the Jos Buttler-led side will stay relevant in the three-match ODI series. The hosts are already 1-0 ahead in the series after clinching a win in Nagpur recently.

Virat Kohli comes back into playing XI, Jaiswal misses out

To fans' delight, Team India have rested the explosive opener Yashasvi Jaiswal in a bid to make way for the batting stalwart and the former captain Virat Kohli. Notably, Kohli had missed the first ODI owing to injury concerns related to his knee. It was revealed by skipper Rohit that he had sustained a swelling on his knee the night before the first ODI. However, on the eve of the Cuttack ODI. Kohli was looking in good touch while batting in the nets.

Maiden ODI cap for Varun Chakravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav rested

Meanwhile, the Rohit Sharma-led side also made another change. A much-awaited ODI debut was on the cards for the man of the moment and mystery spinner, Varun Chakravarthy, after tormenting England batters all through the T20I series, CHakaravarthy was finally drafted into the playing XI. As a result, of his debut, ace leg spinner Kuldeep Yadav has been rested ahead of the second ODI of the series. Notably, the willy off-spinner became the second oldest Indian after Farokh Engineer to make his India debut in ODIs.

Rohit Sharma’s statement at the toss

It was a good performance in the first game. That's what I loved about. The energy was very good despite not being on the field for a while. It was superb to watch after losing two wickets. Shreyas prides himself on that intent and attitude and not to forget the contributions of Shubman and Axar as well. Black soil pitch, not sure. Maybe play on the slower side, that's what I expect. Two changes, Jaiswal makes way for Virat. Kuldeep is rested so Varun makes his debut," said Rohit at the toss.

England’s Playing XI and Jacob Bethell excluded

On the other hand, England who announced their playing XI one day prior have made three changes to their ODI line-up. The rising star Jacob Bethell was excluded from the side as he sustained a serious hamstring injury. As a result, players like Jofra Archer and Brydon Carse have been left out of the Cuttack ODI. Among the three changes, in place of Bethell and the two pacemen, England have drafted Mark Wood, Gus Atkinson and Jamie Overton into the playing XI.

Meanwhile, the visiting captain Jos Buttler won the toss and elected to bat first. While Rohit he was little unsure about the nature of the pitch as it is based on the black soil. However, as the game progresses, he felt that the pitch will play on the slower side.

Jos Buttler’s statement at the toss

"We are going to bat first today. We have been pushing in the right direction, play better for longer and hopefully have a good day today. Looks a bit dry, black soil. Looks a good wicket. Three changes, Mark Wood, Gus Atkinson and Jamie Overton come into the XI," Buttler said during the toss.
