In the inaugural Test clash between India and England in Hyderabad, a perplexing incident unfolded on the opening day. Amidst a double run by England's Rehan Ahmed, a fielder's overthrow left the batter with five runs instead of six. This sparked confusion among spectators both in the stadium and on social media. However, adherence to the International Cricket Council's (ICC) regulations clarified that the decision was accurate.

Rehan Ahmed executed a stylish flick off Jasprit Bumrah's full toss, directing it behind square on the leg side. The excitement turned into confusion when a wide throw from the fielder sailed to the boundary beating the backup fielder, initially earning Rehan six runs. However, the umpire's decision took an unexpected turn, reducing the count to five runs.

The umpire invoked MCC rule 19.8, citing that as neither batter had crossed each other before the throw left the fielder's hand, only five runs were to be awarded. This incident stirred memories of the 2019 ODI World Cup final between England and New Zealand, where a similar scenario unfolded. Despite the batters not crossing, England was granted six runs. The cricketing world, including Rehan's case, now contemplates the consistency and application of this intriguing regulation.

What does the MCC rule 19.8 say?

As per MCC rule 19.8, if a boundary results from an overthrow or a deliberate fielder's act, the awarded runs include penalties for both sides, the boundary allowance, and the runs completed by the batters. This encompasses the run-in progress if the batters had crossed at the moment of the throw or act. The regulation aims to provide clarity and fairness in determining the runs scored in such instances during a cricket match.

Renowned commentator Harsha Bhogle, during the incident on Day 1 of the first Test of the series, elucidated the situation on-air. He took the opportunity to jog former England captain Eoin Morgan's memory and highlighted the contrast between the current scenario in Hyderabad and the 2019 ODI World Cup.
