Right after hitting a double-century (210 runs) against Bangladesh in the last ODI, Team India decided to bench Ishan Kishan in the first ODI against Sri Lanka. Skipper Rohit Sharma indicated about the same in the pre-match press conference but it still remains to be a very surprising decision from the Indian camp.

Courtesy of this, the southpaw now has an interesting record to his name. He has become the highest Men’s ODI scorer before getting dropped from the next game. He is part of the list that also features the likes of Brad Hodge and Clayton Lambert among many others.

Former cricketers like Aakash Chopra and Mohammed Kaif too expressed their disappointment on Kishan's absence but the team management wished to give Shubman Gill an extended run after his commendable job in most of the ODI series in the past year.

Top order shines as India posts a heavy total after first innings

The strategy of playing Shubman Gill in place of Ishan Kishan worked marvellously as the youngster got India off to an absolute flyer along with skipper Rohit Sharma. Gill scored 70 off 60 deliveries while Sharma finally got some runs in the 50-over format as he amassed 83 runs off 67 deliveries.

Coming to bat at number three, ‘King’ Kohli once again reigned supreme and looked in tremendous touch as he scored his 73rd international century in Guwahati. The former India skipper toyed with the Lankan bowlers and looked absolutely delighted after reaching the landmark.

It also turned out to be Kohli’s consecutive ODI century as the 34-year-old had hit a scintillating century in his last ODI match against Bangladesh as well. Courtesy of a batting masterclass from the Men in Blue's top order, India posted 373 runs on board after 50 overs.
