IND vs SL: Shubman Gill 'disappointed' after missing out on century in first ODI
The young opener amassed 70 runs off 60 deliveries before getting dismissed in the 1st ODI against Sri Lanka
Indian batter Shubman Gill has stated that getting dismissed after his half-century when he was well-set was something he rued upon, against Sri Lanka in the 1st ODI on 10th January.
Skipper Rohit Sharma had earlier declared Shubman Gill as the second opener alongside him in the 1st ODI. This decision by him had raised many eyebrows as it was the reason to keep out Ishan Kishan, who is a double-centurion as an opener for India. Gill scored 70 off just 60 balls and provided India with a stormy start at the top of the order along with Sharma.
'Should have got my ton' - Shubman Gill rues getting dismissed
Speaking at the post-match press conference, Gill was quite adamant that he needs to be more prolific when he gets a start. "I was definitely disappointed when I got out on 70 because I had done all the hard work to get going and get a big one for the team," the 23-year-old lamented.
“It feels good when your captain backs you, this was the conversation we had in the practice sessions that I would look to play my natural game whatever I’m doing in the one-dayers. Just look to continue the momentum," concluded Gill.
These comments by Gill came after a much hullabaloo over the decision by Rohit Sharma to opt for him over double-centurion Ishan Kishan, in order to provide the former a "fair chance" to express himself as an opener and get a proper hang of the game.
Gill had a fruitful 2022 in the ODI format where he scored 638 runs from 12 innings at an average of 70.88 and which included his maiden century and four fifties. Continuing from where he left off, he began 2023 with yet another half-century as he along with Rohit put on a 143-run opening stand that set the tone for India's mammoth 373/7.
