India's timid approach has hurt them in ICC events: Nasser Hussain

The Indian team bagged another bilateral series after thumping South Africa in the final ODI in Delhi on the October 11. While their form remains unmatched in bilateral contests, the Men in Blue have been underwhelming in ICC tournaments off late. Former England skipper Nasser Hussain weighed in on the topic, labeling India's approach as 'timid' at global events.

Rohit Sharma, who took over the reins from Virat Kohli last year has guided India to record-setting wins across formats. But the flamboyant opener's first major assignment as the Indian skipper; Asia Cup 2022, ended in disappointment after his side failed to make the final. And while they are playing some swashbuckling cricket at the moment, Nasser Hussain felt that India's conservative approach with the bat, especially in the powerplay's cost them dearly in the 2021 World Cup.

"India's issues have been ICC events really. They have been going around beating everyone, with a variety of players, they have rotated and rested. But the truth is that they have played some timid cricket in world events, like almost gone into their shell. They definitely played some fearful cricket in the last World Cup, especially in the powerplays," Hussain said in a chat with Sky Sports.

The former English cricketer also touched upon India's T20 World Cup squad, which has got two notable absentees in Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja. But Hussain feels that Suryakumar Yadav's sensational hitting prowess coupled with India's current fearless batting approach might turn things around for them in this year's tournament in Australia. He reckoned that India should carry the same mentality into the ICC event, that they showcase in bilateral competitions.

"India have got to keep the hitting potential. Suryakumar Yadav has been in unbelievable form. They are missing two great cricketers in Jadeja and Bumrah. They have got to keep the same mindset they have had in the bilateral events," the former captain further added.
