Indian Premier League 2023 (IPL) will get underway on March 31 with reigning champions Gujarat Titans clashing against Chennai Super Kings in the opener in Ahmedabad. The two-time champion Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) will face Punjab Kings in their opening clash in Mohali on April 1, in the second game of the tournament. KKR are placed in Group A alongside Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals, and Lucknow Super Giants.

All ten teams will play at their designated home venue for the first time since IPL 2019 and the final will be played on May 28 in Ahmedabad. Apart from ten franchise venues, Guwahati and Dharamshala will also host a few games in IPL 2023.

Kolkata Knight Riders endured a poor season during the IPL 2022 as they won just six games from 14 group-stage matches to finish in the seventh position. Shreyas Iyer captained the team for the first time last season but some big names struggled to make an impact. Shreyas top-scored with 401 runs and Andre Russell took the most (17) wickets for KKR last season but it was not enough for them to secure a place in the playoffs. 

Ahead of the IPL 2023 mini-auction, KKR released Aman Khan, Shivam Mavi, Mohammad Nabi, Chamika Karunaratne, Aaron Finch, Alex Hales, Abhijeet Tomar, Ajinkya Rahane, Ashok Sharma, Baba Indrajith, Pratham Singh, Ramesh Kumar, Rasikh Salam, and Sheldon Jackson. Overseas stars Pat Cummins and Sam Billings also made themselves unavailable for the IPL 2023.

But Knight Riders managed to rope in New Zealand pacer Lockie Ferguson, Indian bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur, and Afghanistan wicketkeeper-batter Rahmanullah Gurbaz before the auction. KKR entered the mini-auction with just INR 7.05 crore in the purse and had an arguably average auction on December 23. 

They signed promising wicketkeeper batter Narayan Jagadeesan for INR 90 lakh to provide a quality backup to Gurbaz. KKR management also spent wisely to sign Bangladesh star Shakib Al Hasan (INR 1.5 crore) and Namibian all-rounder David Wiese (INR 1 crore). KKR also added in-form Bangladesh batter Litton Das for INR 50 lakh to add steel to their top order.
