IPL 2023: MS Dhoni becomes first cricketer to play 250 games in tournament history
Dhoni is the second-most successful captain in IPL history, with four titles to his name.
The IPL 2023 final has finally got underway as Chennai Super Kings took on Gujarat Titans on the reserve day (May 29). CSK captain MS Dhoni won the toss and invited Gujarat to bat first in the all-important game. It was a special outing for the ‘Captain Cool’ as he walked out in his 250th game in IPL history, becoming the first player to achieve the milestone.
Dhoni is the second most successful captain in the history of IPL, having led CSK to four title victories in 2010, 2011, 2018 and 2021. The 41-year-old veteran also played for Rising Pune Super Giants in the year 2016 and 2017, when Chennai was banned fpr two years followin the IPL 2013 spot fixing scandal.
Notably, Dhoni has captained 226 matches in IPL history and won 132 out of those while losing 91 with a win percentage of 58.40%. His win percentage is the best in the history of the tournament among captains who have led their teams in over 100 matches.
Dhoni has scored 5082 runs in 249 IPL matches at an average of 39.09 and a strike rate of 135.96 with 24 fifties to his name. His best-ever performance came in the 2018 season, when he scored 455 runs in 16 matches at an average of 75.83 and a strike rate of 150.66 with three fifties.
Ahead of the ongoing season, there were widespread talks of Dhoni retiring from IPL at the end of the season. The entire CSK team will look to give a winning farewell to the legendary captain by winning the big final if he decides to hang up his boots at the end of the season.
Meanwhile, the IPL 2023 final was originally scheduled to take place on Sunday, May 28, however, the incessant rain in Ahmedabad did not allow a single ball to bowledm leaving the fans frustrated. As a result, the match was shifted to the reserve day with the scheduled time start remaining the same.
