IPL 2023: Mumbai Indians vs Sunrisers Hyderabad, Match 69 - Talking Points and Who Said What?
MI beat SRH by eight wickets.
Courtesy of a scintillating ton by Cameron Green, Mumbai Indians (MI) trumped Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by eight wickets at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday, May 21. In doing so, the side is still alive in the race for the playoffs, however, they will hope that RCB loses their fixture against GT to secure their berth in the Eliminator.
The orange outfit posted a competitive first innings total of 200 runs with solid knocks from openers, Vivrant Sharma and Mayank Agarwal. However, skipper Rohit Sharma and Green rose to the occasion and helped clinch the crucial two points with their blazing innings.
Let's look at the Talking Points from today's game –
Vivrant-Mayank propel SRH towards competitive total
SRH’s opening duo of Vivrant Sharma and Mayank Agarwal handed the required head start as the pair added a 140-run partnership off mere 83 balls. While Vivrant registered 69 off 47 balls, it was Mayank’s masterclass of 83 off 46 balls which grabbed the limelight. His impressive knock included four maximums and eight fours at a stunning strike rate of 180.43. In doing so, the orange outfit were able to post a competitive total of 200 runs for the first innings.
Akash Madhwal records four-wicket haul to get MI back into the contest
Just when SRH seemed to be steady in their batting innings, it was pacer Akash Madhwal who got the prized scalps of Vivrant and Mayank. Akash got the required breakthroughs as he recorded a four-wicket haul to help Mumbai get back into the contest. In his four overs, the pacer gave 37 runs at an economy of 9.25.
Cameron Green’s blazing ton blows Hyderabad away
In response to the humongous total, SRH got the early scalp of Ishan Kishan to extend their domination. Despite the breakthrough, it was skipper Rohit Sharma and star all-rounder Cameron Green who made the chase look pedestrian with their blazing innings. While Rohit got a 37-ball 56, Green clobbered an unconquered 100 off 47 balls which featured eight sixes and as many fours. In doing so, he steered the side to seal the crucial two points as Mumbai are still in contention for the playoffs.
Winning skipper, Rohit Sharma said-
We came with the mindset to win and not worry what happens elsewhere. Just hoping for the best. I haven't spoken to anyone. Even if we don't go through, we got ourselves to blame. If we do, boys get credit. Last year, we did a great favour to RCB. We hope the result there goes our way. We didn't start well but fixed things along the way. If I have to look back, we lost crucial moments and games like against Punjab here and last game vs LSG. We can't look too much into that. Sometimes it doesn't come along which is fair.
Losing skipper, Aiden Markram said-
Not the campaign we hoped for. Decent start with the bat but sadly we couldn't get over 200. Guys tried well but fell short at the end. Lot of learnings along the way, we have a great group of guys. The pressures are high and things get under the microscope but I've learned a lot. Vivrant was great, he and guys like Klaasy and Bhuvi were consistent.
Player of the Match, Cameron Green said-
Great stand with Rohit, he's experienced. Having his leadership at the other end helped. The setup has been great, I've been well looked after. No pressure despite the price tag. The intent at the top is important, with Ishan and Rohit above and SKY below me. Pollard has helped with range hitting too. When we had 20 to get, I told SKY to finish it. But with two runs to go, we just trickled over the line.
