From the past few matches, we have witnessed some absolute nail-biters in the ongoing mega cricket carnival and yesterday's game was no exception either. On Wednesday, April 12, Rajasthan Royals (RR) skipper Sanju Samson was penalized for failing to keep up with the over-rate during their IPL encounter against Chennai Super Kings (CSK). However, RR upset the four-time champions by three runs in what turned out to be a humdinger. Having won three of the four matches played, RR now leads the IPL 2023 points table with six points.
Samson was fined INR 12 lakh for keeping a slow over-rate during the match. Slow over-rate occurs when a fielding team is unable to bowl its 20 overs within the time limit. For the uninitiated, an IPL team is supposed to bowl 20 overs in 90 minutes and this slot includes an 85-minute playing period as well as a five-minute session for two 150-second strategic timeouts.
"As it was the team's first offence of the season under the IPL's Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences, captain Sanju Samson was fined Rs 12 lakhs," an IPL media advisory read.
Notably, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) skipper Faf du Plessis is the first captain to be penalized for a slow over-rate this season. The South African was fined INR 12 lakh after failing to start the final over before the cutoff time and was forced to bring in an extra fielder inside the circle during the match against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on Monday, April 10. Eventually, LSG pulled off a brilliant outing and defeated RCB by one wicket in a last-ball thriller.
Rajasthan Royals beat Chennai Super Kings in their den in a thrilling finish
On Wednesday, RR beat the four-time IPL champions on the last ball, with Sandeep Sharma bowling a stunning final over. CSK were reduced to 172 for 6 when chasing a total of 176, with Ravichandran Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal each taking two wickets and Sandeep and Adam Zampa taking one.
Earlier, RR opener Jos Buttler hit 52 off 36 balls as Rajasthan Royals posted a total of 175 for 8. His knock was studded with three maximums and one boundary. For CSK, Jadeja, Akash Singh, and Tushar Deshpande also got two wickets while Moeen Ali grabbed one.
