IPL 2024: 3 Changes Punjab Kings should make to get back to winning ways

The current season of IPL is turning out to be yet another disastrous campaign for Punjab Kings. The 3-wicket loss to Gujarat Titans on Sunday has condemned Punjab Kings to ninth place in the table with 6 matches left to be played this year.

The next match for the Punjab is away to the Kolkata Knight Riders who are sitting second in the IPL table. It will be a tough encounter considering the form the KKR team is in right now with the bat and also with the ball. 

With the hopes of qualification hanging by the barest of margins, the PBKS team have no option but to win all the games. Wins will not come until and unless they decide to make a few key changes that could benefit their team.

Here are the three changes PBKS should make ahead of their next game against KKR

3. Play Atharva Taide as a regular opener

The loss of Shikhar Dhawan in the middle of the season has been a huge blow for the Punjab Kings. The veteran batting star is a huge player for his team considering that he had been batting reasonably well during the early stages of the season.

In the absence of Shikhar Dhawan, it is Sam Curran who has come to open for PBKS. The move has backfired big time as the left-handed batter doesn’t have the game to give his team explosive starts. One must assume that the PBKS needs to take a punt with young Atharva Taide who is a specialist opening batter capable of playing attractive shots.

2. Bring Rahul Chahar back into the team

Ever since his move to Punjab Kings, Rahul Chahar hasn’t been the same bowler. The 24-year-old was once one of the most promising young bowlers in India. Rahul Chahar didn’t have a great start to the season and soon found himself on the sidelines.

Harpreet Brar is the only spinner on the PBKS side who has been spearheading the spin department. The addition of Rahul Chahar will not only make it easy for Harpreet Brar but a refreshed approach could also make Rahul Chahar a dangerous bowler.

1. Overreliance on Shashank Singh and Ashutosh Sharma is hurting PBKS 

Punjab Kings have found two new unlikely heroes with the bat who have raised the expectations of the fans. The two players in question are Shashank Singh and Ashutosh Sharma who played a key role in PBKS winning their first encounter against the Titans.

With the top order failing to fire, the PBKS batting has become more reliant on these two young stars. This could come to haunt them as it was seen during the loss to Gujarat Titans as both batters failed to fire. The middle-order hence needs to take more responsibility and stop burdening the two inexperienced batters with sky-high expectations.
