IPL 2024: Fan loses INR 3 lakh after trying to buy tickets for RCB vs CSK clash

The IPL 2024 playoff race is escalating, with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) battling for one of the two remaining spots. Their upcoming clash is being considered as a virtual knockout, adding extra spice to an already heated rivalry. In the middle of all this one fan has desired to witness the action live which has resulted in a costly scam.

With the season coming to its business end, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) have secured their spots for the playoffs. However, several teams including RCB and CSK are still vying for the other two places. With net run rates are likely to be decisive, their match in Bengaluru has taken on huge significance, leading to a pent up in demand for tickets.

A 28-year-old Bengaluru resident has reportedly lost INR 3 lakh after falling victim to an IPL ticket fraud while trying to purchase seats for the potential make-or-break RCB vs CSK clash at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. According to a report in The Times of India, the individual came across an Instagram account named ‘ipl_2024_tickets_24’ that claimed to be selling genuine match tickets.

Bengaluru Police registers a case of cheating

The account operator identified himself as Padma Sinha Vijay Kumar and claimed to be an authorized IPL ticket seller, even providing his Aadhaar details and a mobile number to gain the victim's trust. He quoted INR 2,300 per ticket, prompting the fan to transfer INR 7,900 for three seats initially.

However, despite not receiving the promised e-tickets, the victim continued sending money after being assured of a refund along with the tickets, as well as being told of technical glitches causing delays. By the time the fraudster's demands reached INR 67,000 on top of the original amount, suspicions were raised and the police were notified.

The Bengaluru Police have registered a case of cheating and are investigating the INR 3 lakh IPL ticket scam. They have also issued a warning to cricket fans, urging them to only purchase tickets through official partners to avoid falling prey to such false activities, especially given the nature of playoff clashes.
