After failing to qualify for the play-offs in the 2022 and 2023 editions of the Indian Premier League, Kolkata Knight Riders released some notable names and instead signed Mitchell Starc for INR 24.75 crore. They have also added the likes of Chetan Sakariya, KS Bharat and Dushmantha Chameera to strengthen the squad but that’s not what the fans are most excited about.

After two flop seasons, the two-time champions have decided to bring in former captain Gautam Gambhir as mentor. Under the leadership of the southpaw, the Knight Riders won the championship in 2012 and 2014 and later on, he has done a commendable job as the mentor of the Lucknow Super Giants. He is expected to take the important calls in the KKR team and given his experience, the New Delhi-born is an excellent addition to the team management.

Meanwhile, KKR skipper Shreyas Iyer will be making his return in the forthcoming season. He missed the 2023 edition due to a back injury, but the cricketer has now recovered and will play a crucial part in the team’s success. He will partner with Nitish Rana and Rinku Singh in the middle order, who have done extremely well in the last edition. Rinku particularly went on to play for India, while Nitish kept up with his form in domestic cricket.

The only concern that the team management has is the wicket-keeper spot. Rahmanullah Gurbaz seems to be the favourite but in that case, Jason Roy will have to sit out. They have Bharat as the wicket-keeper option, but his batting in T20Is remains to be a concern. On the other hand, Andre Russell is in remarkable form, as he has done well for the West Indies against Australia and also in the Bangladesh Premier League.

When it comes to bowling, Starc will lead the attack but it’s the spinners who are expected to dominate. The surface in Eden Gardens has changed in recent times, as it is favoring the spinners in recent times. In that case, Sunil Narine, Varun Chakravarthy and Suyash Sharma will play a key role.
