India and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) batter Virat Kohli will make his much-awaited comeback on the cricket pitch as RCB take on Chennai Super Kings in the opening fixture of IPL 2024 on Friday, March 22 at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. Notably, Kohli missed the recently concluded five-match Test series against England as he had to be with his wife Anushka Sharma with the couple expecting their second child.
After the birth of his baby boy ‘Akaay’, Kohli will finally return to the cricket field in IPL 2024 and is ready to make his comeback by getting another record against his name. Notably, the 35-year-old is just six runs away from completing 12,000 runs in T20 cricket and becoming the first India to achieve the feat.

Moreover, if the Delhi-born cricketer manages to reach the landmark in the opening game of IPL 2024 itself, he will become the second fastest batter to achieve the feat after Chris Gayle who achieved the feat in 353 innings. Furthermore, he also has a great chance to register his 100th fifty-plus score in the format and become the third batter to do so after Gayle (110) and David Warner (109).
IPL 2024 to decide Kohli's T20 World Cup fortunes
Notably, Kohli is the sixth-highest run-scorer in T20 cricket with 11994 runs to his name from 359 innings at an average of 41.21 and a strike rate of 133.42 with eight hundreds and 91 fifties. The batting maestro will most likely storm into the top five leading run scorers in the format.

The upcoming season is also important for the former India captain as there are widespread records claiming that Kohli’s selection in the Indian squad for the T20 World Cup 2024 will depend on his IPL performance. The star batter is the leading run-scorer of both IPL (7263 runs) and T20 World Cup (1141 runs) and hence will be eager to put up another batting masterclass in the upcoming edition of the tournament.
