Mumbai Indians (MI) and Delhi Capitals (DC) clash in Match 20 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Sunday, April 07. Having lost all three matches played so far, the hosts returned to their home ground - Wankhede Stadium - with the aim of opening their account. On the other hand, Delhi came on the back of a humiliating 106-run defeat against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

DC captain Rishabh Pant won the toss and elected to bowl, on a more favourable venue for the chasing team. The visitors made two changes to their line-up from the previous game, while the home side made three changes, with Suryakumar Yadav replacing Naman Dhir notable among them.

Let's look at the Mumbai Indians' 1st innings highlight against Delhi Capitals in Match 20:

Mumbai Indians: 50 runs in 4.1 overs (25 balls)

Khaleel Ahmed gave DC a decent start but Ishant Sharma conceded 14 runs in the second over as Rohit Sharma decided to wreak havoc. Kishan did not want to be a mere spectator at the other end as the southpaw hammered a couple of boundaries in Khaleel’s second over. After hitting back-to-back sixes in the fourth over, Rohit launched one more into the stands in the first ball of the fifth over and the team score crossed 50 runs.

Powerplay 1: Overs 0.1 to 6.0 (Mandatory – 75 runs, 0 wickets)

Left-arm spinner Axar Patel conceded 14 runs in his first over. Rohit smashed three boundaries in the final over of the powerplay, bowled by Lalit Yadav, and ensured MI got off to a flying start.

Strategic Timeout 1: Mumbai Indians – 80/1 in 7.0 overs (Suryakumar Yadav (0* off 0), Ishan Kishan (25* off 15)

Rohit Sharma looked set for a big score but his entertaining knock was interrupted by Axar Patel on the last ball of the seventh over. The former MI captain fell just 1 run short of his half-century (49 off 27 balls) but gave his team a desired start. The wicket also marked the first Strategic Timeout of the game.

Mumbai Indians: 100 runs in 9.5 overs (59 balls)

Suryakumar Yadav first match of the season turned out to be a horrible one as the star batter was dismissed for a two-ball duck. Anrich Nortje was introduced for the first time and the Proteas pacer gave a massive breakthrough in no time. Two key players are back in the hut and that brought some smiles in the DC camp. However, Ishan Kishan was striking at a rapid pace and the southpaw breached the 100-run for MI with a six off Nortje in the 10th over.

Strategic Timeout 2: Mumbai Indians - 138/4 in 15 overs Hardik Pandya (31* off 27), Tim David (4* off 6)

MI scored at a fast rate, but they also lost wickets in the process. Axar Patel caught and bowled Ishan Kishan (42 off 23) in the 11th over and Khaleel Ahmed got rid of Tilak Varma (6 off 5) in the 13th over. Two successive wickets slowed MI’s scoring rate and they were 138/4 in 15 overs before umpire signalled for the second timeout.

Mumbai Indians: 150 runs in 16 overs (96 balls)

Tim David struck a maximum off Jhye Richardson on the first ball of the 16th over and set the tone for the death-over scoring. With a single off the final delivery, MI reached 150 runs.

Mumbai Indians: 200 runs in 19 overs (114 balls)

Hardik Pandya and Tim David regained the momentum but MI lost their skipper in the 18th over. That brought Romario Shepherd to the crease and he joined in the fun alongside David. The Australian batter hit back-to-back boundaries in the 19th over to complete 200 runs for MI.

End of the first innings: Mumbai Indians: 234/5 (20 overs)

MI scored 32 off the last over as Romario Shepherd unleashed his beast mode against Anrich Nortje. The Caribbean all-rounder smashed four sixes and two fours to take MI’s total to an imposing 234. Shepherd concluded his impactful cameo with 39 off just 10 balls. A tough chase ahead for DC, let's see what awaits us in the second innings.
