In the first game of the final double-header of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) saw hosts Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) face Punjab Kings (PBKS), at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, in Hyderabad. Both the teams have their fates sealed already but the hosts are still in with a shout to face in the top two if they win and other results go in their favour.
Notably, Punjab Kings won the toss and opted to bat first with the hope to post a massive score on a good batting wicket. This was the first instance of a team fielding only one overseas player in their playing XI as all of their other overseas players were unavailable for their final game of the season.
Punjab Kings - 61/0 after 6 overs - First strategic Time Out
During the first three overs, the Sunrisers Hyderabad bowlers were able to extract some swing but the opening duo of Prabhsimran Singh and Atharva Taide were cautious. The openers broke the shackles and started playing freely as they found the gaps at the right times. They found the momentum that they were desiring and ended the powerplay on a bright note having not lost any wickets at that stage.
Punjab Kings - 174/3 after 16 overs - Second Strategic Time Out
Even after the strategic Time Out, the Punjab Kings continued with the onslaught as they got one or two boundaries in every over. They were batting at a run rate of ten and were looking to dominate all of the bowlers today at the Rajiv Gandhi International stadium in Hyderabad. T Natarajan came back into the attack to bowl the tenth over and got the wicket of Atharva Taide.
However, Prabhsimran Singh continued the fireworks at one end and got great support from Rilee Rossouw. They had a great partnership of 54 runs but the opener was dismissed by Vijayakanth Viyaskanth as Heinrich Klaasen took an amazing catch. Rossouw continued with the boundaries but a mix-up with Shashank Singh meant the latter had to go back to the pavilion.
Punjab Kings - 214/5 after 20 overs
Sunrisers Hyderabad seemed to have found the momentum as they continued to bowl on great line and length. Skipper Pat Cummins was able to scalp the wicket of Rilee Rossouw who looked dangerous and he had to depart after a great knock of 49 from 24 deliveries. In the next over, Ashutosh Sharma was sent back by Natarajan as Sanvir Singh took a splendid catch. In the end, Punjab Kings were able to make /5 in their 20 overs at the Rajiv Gandhi International stadium.
