Punjab Kings come up with a stunning world -record chase to beat Kolkata Knight Riders to register their third win of the season

Kolkata Knight Riders caused carnage with the bat as they 261/6 from their 20 overs. Phil Salt and Sunil Narine led the charge with the bat as they smashed the Punjab Kings bowlers to all parts of the stadium. The opening batters added 138 runs from just 10.3 overs.

Sam Curran won the toss and chose to bowl first and immediately regretted the decision. The Punjab Kings bowlers were let down by their fielders who dropped catches and also gave away free runs thanks to the misfields.

Punjab Kings: 50 runs off 3.3 overs

Needing 262 to win. Jonny Bairstow and Prabhsimran Singh decided to fight fire with fire. The young Prabhsimran Singh in particular decided to cut loose and take the KKR bowlers to task.

Half-Century: Prabhsimran Singh off 18 balls

Punjab Kings got off to a great start as Prabhsimran Singh hit fours and sixes at will. The KKR bowlers had no clue as the young batter played 360-degree cricket to stun the hosts.

Powerplay: Overs 0.1 to 6 and first strategic timeout (Mandatory – 93/1)

Jonny Bairstow decided to join in the fun as he went after Anukul Roy in the 6th over. The last ball of the over saw Prabhsimran Singh run out as he was caught short of his ground. Sunil Narine rifled in a powerful throw to dismiss Prabhsimran for 54 runs off 20 balls.

Punjab Kings: 100 runs from 7.2 overs

Post the fall of Prabhsimran Singh, Jonny Bairstow opened his arms to continue the run-scoring with a six off Harshit Rana, the 100-came up for Punjab Kings in just 7.2 overs.

Half-Century: Jonny Bairstow off 23 balls

Kolkata Knight Riders’ bowlers had a lot to ponder as the Punjab Kings batters didn’t cave in under pressure. Jonny Bairstow seemed up for a fight as he raced to his IPL fifty from just 23 balls with a six against Varun Chakravarthy over long-off.

Punjab Kings: 150 runs from 11 overs

Rilee Rossouw finally found his groove with the bat as he was at the forefront of yet another fighting stand with Jonny Bairstow. At the halfway mark the PBKS team was in fact on par with KKR.

Punjab Kings: 200 runs from 15 overs

Sunil Narine gave the home team the much-needed breather when he got the key wicket of Rilee Rossouw. The introduction of Shashank Singh saw the veteran batter hit Varun Chakravarthy to help PBKS keep their noses ahead of KKR.

Punjab Kings: Second Strategic Time-Out (201/2 from 15 overs)

The hush at the Eden Gardens showed which team was in control. Punjab Kings' batters came out all guns blazing to chase the huge total down and didn’t let up on the pressure. KKR bowlers had no chance as they were met by a resolute Jonny Bairstow with the bat.

Century: Jonny Bairstow off 45 balls.

As they say Cometh the hour, cometh the man, the adage held true for Jonny Bairstow who blazed his way through to his 2nd IPL century. The English batter put the KKR bowlers to the sword with his punishing knock.

Half-Century: Shashank Singh off 23 balls

If one felt that the chances for PBKS were in the doldrums after losing their 2nd wicket. They were grossly mistaken. Shashank Singh smashed yet another fifty this season with a six off Harshit Rana in the 18th over.

Milestone – Sixes galore creates new history

When Shashank Singh hit Harshit Rana for his first six off the 18th over, it was the 39th six of the game. This is now the record for the most sixes in a game as new records are being created in IPL 2024.

End of the match: Punjab Kings: 262/2 from 18.4 overs

Eden Gardens was left shell-shocked as the Punjab Kings batters finished the game off with more than an over to spare. Shashank Singh was the hero with the bat as he combined with Jonny Bairstow to pull off the most outstanding chases in the history of cricket.
