IPL 2024: Who is Donovan Ferreira? Everything you need to know about Rajasthan Royals’ all-rounder

Rajasthan Royals who are sitting second in the IPL table are playing against Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. The Royals had lost their last game to Sunrisers Hyderabad away from home by a single run.

Donovan Ferreira the South African star is making his first-ever appearance for the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL. The 25-year-old came into the team instead of West Indian star Shimron Hetmyer.

The right-handed batter was picked up by Rajasthan Royals for INR 50 Lakhs during the IPL 2023 auctions. Despite all his talents and the hype created around him, Ferreira didn’t make his IPL debut during the 2023 season and was warming the benches.

Donovan Ferreira: Yet another multi-talented South African star

Indian Premier League has seen many multi-talented South Africans show their skills. AB De Villiers, Faf Du Plessis, and JP Duminy are some of the names that come to mind. This year Tristan Stubbs has shown what a great talent he is for the Delhi Capitals side. 

Donovan Ferreira is yet another name that has the attributes to excel across all the facets of the game. The 25-year-old is a hard hitting batter with the ability to score at a brisk pace in the middle-order. His first impact for RR came when he held onto a sharp chance to dismiss Jake-Fraser McGurk to give Ashwin his first wicket of the day. 

The 25-year-old from Pretoria has already played 53 T20 games and scored 933 runs with four half-centuries and a strike rate of 153. Apart from his batting skills, Donovan Ferreira is also an excellent wicketkeeper and has pouched 29 catches and got three stumping dismissals to his credit.

South Africa gave him his debut cap against Australia last year and his second game was against India in December at Johannesburg. Batting and wicket-keeping aren’t just the only areas Donovan Ferreira excels in the 25-year-old also bowls decent off-spin bowling and has picked 10 wickets so far.

In the last few matches, Rajasthan Royals have seen their middle-order batting unable to post consistent runs on the board. With the inclusion of Donovan Ferreira, the Royals will have a dependable batter and an expert finisher who can whack the ball when the going gets tough. If the young Donovan Ferreira can grab his chances, Rajasthan Royals will be a happy bunch and be looking forward to have a crack at the IPL title this year.
