Delhi Capitals' (DC) skipper Axar Patel was fined for a slow over-rate in the previous match against the Mumbai Indians (MI) in IPL 2025. Since this was his first offence, he was fined INR 12 lakhs. As per Article 2.22 of the IPL's Code of Conduct, captains are fined INR 12 lakh on the first occurrence of slow over rates in the tournament.
Earlier, if the offence was committed more than once, it led to the captain's suspension from one game, depending on the severity of the offence. However, the IPL committee has discarded the suspension rule from the tournament, and now the offences will only be dealt with through fines and in-field restrictions.
The Axar Patel-led DC team lost their first game of the season by 12 runs after maintaining a winning streak of four matches. MI batters were stunning in the first innings as they scored 205 runs. Ryan Rickelton (41 off 25), Suryakumar Yadav (40 off 28), Tilak Varma (59 off 33), and Naman Dhir’s (38* off 17) collective efforts helped MI get their second win of the tournament.

Karun Nair’s batting heroics goes in vain as DC's winning streak ends
Despite Karun Nair's solid knock of 89 runs off 40 balls in the first game of the season, DC batters failed in the middle order, leading to their first defeat. Abhishek Porel (33 off 25) and Nair formed a sensible partnership of 119 runs. However, after Porel's dismissal, Delhi batters kept losing wickets at regular intervals.
For MI, Karn Sharma was the 'star' of the match as he claimed three wickets and restricted DC from chasing down the score. He won the 'Player of the Match' award for his magnificent bowling performance. Mitchell Santner was also brilliant with the ball, taking two wickets. Only Deepak Chahar and Karn Sharma were economical, while all the other bowlers, including Jasprit Bumrah, were hit for boundaries and maximums.
