Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have signed South Africa's Dewald Brevis as a replacement for the injured Gurjapneet Singh for the remainder of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. The left-arm pacer has now officially been ruled out of the remainder of the tournament, as the Proteas batter has been named his replacement in the squad.

Dewald Brevis has played 81 T20s and scored 1787 runs with a highest score of 162. He made his T20I Debut for South Africa in 2023 and has played 2 T20Is so far. Brevis was previously part of Mumbai Indians (MI), where he played 10 matches. He will join CSK for INR 2.2 crore.

The 21-year-old had dropped a massive hint on social media on Friday, April 18, which has got the fans buzzing. Brevis, who is commonly nicknamed 'Baby AB', posted a blank yellow post on his Instagram account, and fans were quick to guess his possible link-up with CSK for the rest of the season after going unsold at the Mega Auction.

The talented youngster did not write anything in the caption, but the colour and the timing of the post had sparked speculations, which have now been confirmed.

Brevis turned heads with his resounding performances in the 2022 Under-19 World Cup, where he amassed 506 runs in just six innings. He notched up two centuries and three half-centuries during the global event and grabbed attention across the cricket fraternity. For Mumbai Indians, Brevis was there with the team for two seasons before being released ahead of last year's mega auction. The right-handed batter scored 230 runs at an average of 23 and a strike rate of 133.73.

This is Chennai's second replacement of the season, as recently, the five-time champions had added Ayush Mhatre to their squad. Notably, Mhatre's incoming was due to an injury to their mainstay skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad, as the Pune-born faced a hairline fracture on his left elbow during one of the matches of the ongoing IPL season. The captaincy mantle has now been handed over to legendary skipper MS Dhoni.

Chennai's qualification in ambiguity

The side has faced a sedated start to their IPL 2025 campaign, having won just two of their seven games so far. They will be facing Mumbai Indians in their next encounter, which will be played at the iconic Wankhede Stadium. Notably, the two sides met at their respective tournament opener against each other at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, and the hosts had marked a winning start to the season, but lost five on the trot thereafter. They will be hoping for another win to start the winning streak.
