Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Hardik Pandya has been fined INR 12 lakhs for maintaining a slow over rate during their match against Gujarat Titans (GT) in the 18th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
The five-time IPL champions lost the match by a 36-run margin against the home team on March 30. Earlier, the right-handed all-rounder missed the first match of their team against Chennai Super Kings (CSK), during which the team was led by Suryakumar Yadav. The Baroda batter was suspended for the Mumbai Indians 2024 IPL fixture against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) due to the same offense.
“As this was his team’s first offence of the season under Article 2.2 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Pandya was fined INR 12 lakhs,” the official statement said.
Before the start of the 2025 IPL season, the governing council introduced changes to the rules regarding slow over-rate offenses. “Effective this season, a new Code of Conduct will be implemented from the TATA IPL 2025 season, introducing a demerit points system and suspension points which will remain valid for 36 months,” as quoted by BCCI.

'I think that is something out of my control' - Hardik on slow over rate fine rule
“I think that is something out of my control. Last year what occurred was part of the sport, I think we bowled one and a half or two minutes late. At that point of time I did not know the consequences of what could happen. It is unfortunate, but it is the rule. Now will they continue with this rule next year, I think it is up to the higher authorities. They can see into it, and how it can be done,” Pandya, as quoted by NDTV Sports, said in the press conference organized by MI before the start of IPL 2025.
Meanwhile, the MI team are currently in ninth position with zero points and will face Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on March 31 at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.
