Mumbai Indians (MI) pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah will miss the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) match against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) due to a back injury sustained during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT). The right-arm fast bowler is also set to miss MI’s next home game against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on April 7.
The pacer, who has been dealing with stress-related discomfort in his lower back, is currently undergoing rehabilitation, as per an ESPNcricinfo report. The bowler has been steadily increasing his bowling workload in recent weeks at the BCCI’s National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. The Ahmedabad-born cricketer is now set to undergo the final rounds of fitness tests before making his return.
The 31-year-old is being cautious about his recovery, ensuring he is fully fit before returning to competitive cricket. His return is being closely monitored, especially with India’s crucial five-Test series against England, set to begin on June 28. The management is keen to avoid any setbacks ahead of the series.
Bumrah, who has played 133 IPL matches and taken 165 wickets, missed the entire 2023 season due to a back injury. Meanwhile, his absence has been felt this season by MI, who have won just one of their first three matches. The team has introduced new players such as Ashwani Kumar, Satyanarayana Raju, and Vignesh Puthur. In Bumrah’s absence, Deepak Chahar and Trent Boult have been leading the bowling attack.
Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene had earlier stated that Bumrah would miss matches in March but was expected to return in April. However, his recovery has taken longer than anticipated.
The right-arm pacer’s woes began during the Sydney Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which ruled him out of the 2025 Champions Trophy. Despite being named in India’s provisional squad, fresh scans in early February revealed continued discomfort, leading to his exclusion from the final squad. India went on to win the tournament last month.
With Bumrah still recovering, MI will have to rely on their available resources as they navigate the tournament without their premier fast bowler.
