Ahead of the upcoming IPL 2025, the Delhi Capitals franchise have announced the former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen as their new mentor for the season. The announcement was made on Thursday, February 27 through their DC Fan Sabha App.

The 44-year-old will join hands with the head coach Hemang Badani, assistant coach Matthew Mott, bowling coach Munaf Patel and the Director of cricket Venugopal Rao. The franchise is yet to name their captain for the season ahead.

Pietersen, who last played in the IPL in 2016, will be coaching for the first time. From 2009 to 2016, he played for three IPL teams, including Delhi (then known as the Daredevils), and he even captained 17 times. In the IPL 2009, he led Royal Challengers Bengaluru for a short time before leading Delhi Daredevils for an entire season in 2014, when they finished last in the standings with two wins in 14 games.

In addition, Pietersen captained England in 15 international matches, including a 2008 Test series in India that lasted two games.

Pietersen has kept up contact with Kiran Kumar Grandhi, chairman of GMR, the co-owners of the Delhi Capitals franchise, ever since he captained Delhi in the 2014 Indian Premier League. He assisted in negotiating a historic agreement between GMR and Hampshire County Cricket Club in September of last year. In 2024, Pietersen and Grandhi also went to the Utilita Bowl to see England play Australia in the T20I.

Other than this, Pietersen has appeared in the Big Bash League (BBL), Pakistan Super League (PSL) and Caribbean Premier League (CPL). He played 200 T20 matches in total, scoring 5695 runs at a strike rate of 137 and an average of 33.89.

After letting go of most of their expensive players and keeping only Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Tristan Stubbs, and Abishek Porel, DC, who have only made it to the IPL final once in all these years, finished sixth in the 2024 tournament and entered the auction last year with the largest purse of all ten teams. Subsequently, they expanded their roster to include KL Rahul, Harry Brook, Faf du Plessis, and Mitchell Starc.

The Dubai Capitals just won the ILT20 title, the first trophy won by a Capitals team in men's or women's competitions worldwide, under the coaching of Badani, Rao, and Munaf, their Indian support staff.
