Mohammed Shami dropped a catch at short fine leg and injured his hand in the process in the second match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 on Sunday, March 23, at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.
Making his debut for Sunrisers Hyderabad, Shami bowled three overs with the new ball and picked up the wicket of Nitish Rana, while conceding 33 runs. Rajasthan were chasing a record 287 but they lost three wickets inside the powerplay.
Sanju Samson and Dhruv Jurel joined forces and tried to resurrect the Rajasthan innings in the hope of scripting an improbable win. Both batters were firing on all cylinders, trying to put the Hyderabad bowlers under pressure on a belter of a track.
When Samson was batting on 53, he gave Sunrisers a chance as he tried to pull away a slower delivery from Pat Cummins. However, the Kerala wicketkeeper-batter was too early on the shot and the ball ballooned off his bat to Shami at short fine leg.
The Bengal seamer nonchalantly put his left hand out to catch the ball but it popped out. Shami immediately looked at his hand before deciding to walk off the field for some treatment. While walking past Cummins, it seemed that Shami pointed to the lights, possibly asserting that he had lost sight of the ball as it came towards him.
Sanju Samson fails to capitalise on slice of luck
Samson only added 13 runs to his score after being given a reprieve by Shami. The former tried to hit a big shot off a Harshal Patel short ball in the 14th over. However, he only managed a massive top-edge which was safely pouched by wicketkeeper Heinrich Klaasen.
Samson's flamboyant knock ended for 66 after he batted 37 balls, hitting seven fours and four sixes. This ended a valiant 111-run partnership off 60 balls between him and Jurel.
