Punjab Kings (PBKS) remain one of the four Indian Premier League franchises, that have never lifted the coveted IPL title. PBKS announced their list of retentions and released players on Thursday, October 31 ahead of the IPL 2025 mega-auction.
The Punjab-based franchises have released some big names, including Harshal Patel, Sam Curran, Jitesh Sharma, Kagiso Rabada, Jonny Bairstow, and Liam Livingstone. The side has shown faith in two uncapped players in terms of Shashank Singh and Prabhsimran Singh ahead of the mega auction. Punjab has retained the least number of players and will go into the auction with the maximum purse amount.
In the 2024 edition, Punjab finished the league stage in the ninth spot on the points table with five wins from 14 matches having 10 points to their name. The Preity Zinta-owned side has been unfortunate for almost a decade as they haven't managed to qualify for the knockout stage.
In 17 editions, the side has qualified for the knockout stage only twice, and to date their best season has been the 2014 season when they topped the league stage, winning 11 out of their 14 games. Though the side qualified for the summit clash, but suffered an unfortunate three-wicket loss at the hands of Kolkata Knight Riders. In the inaugural season in 2008, under the astute leadership of Yuvraj Singh, the Punjab franchise finished second on the table but lost the Semi-Final 2 to MS Dhoni's Chennai Super Kings.
In the pursuit of revamping their fortunes, the Punjab Kings management has made some changes to their coaching staff ahead of the mega auction by appointing legendary Australia skipper Ricky Ponting as their new head coach.
Ponting had a successful seven-year stint with Delhi Capitals and is all set for a new challenge. Apart from Ponting's arrival, the 2014 finalists have retained the services of batting and wicketkeeping coach Brad Haddin, and spin bowling coach Sunil Joshi, and have added James Hope to their setup as a fast bowling coach
Having a good enough amount of remaining purse, PBKS will look to make valuable additions to their squad in the mega-auction and have a shot at their maiden title win in the upcoming season.
