IPL 2025: RCB captain Rajat Patidar fined heavily for Code of Conduct breach against Mumbai Indians

Royal Challengers Bengaluru Captain Rajat Patidar has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during Match No. 21 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.

As this was his team’s first offence of the season under Article 2.2 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Patidar was fined INR 12 lakhs. For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee’s decision is final and binding.

Patidar had a stellar outing both as a captain and as a batter. The RCB in-charge was told to put his team to bat first, after Mumbai Indians won the toss on Monday. After an attacking display of batting by Virat Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal, it was Patidar who made a blistering 64 off just 32 balls, which helped RCB finish with 221/5 in the first innings.

At the time of defending the target, things went down the wire as MI were cruising towards victory with dangerous batters Tilak Varma and Hardik Pandya on strike for bringing the curtains down. However, Patidar's brilliance with his tactical moves to use the right bowlers at the right time ensured that the game did not slip away from their hands, and eventually win the last-over thriller by 12 runs, also breaking the side's 10-year losing streak at Wankhede.

Amazing to see the courage from the bowlers: Patidar

"It was a really amazing match. It was very hard. The way the bowlers have shown their courage, it was amazing to watch. This award goes to the bowling unit. It is not easy to stop any team, especially at this ground, and the way they have done it, was incredible. The way the fast bowlers executed their plans was amazing. The way KP (Krunal Pandya) bowled that last over, it was not easy and the way he bowled was amazing. The way he has shown the courage was fantastic," the Madhya Pradesh cricketer said at the post-match party.

"It was pretty clear (at the second time-out) that we had to take the game as much deep as we can, and then we can use one over of KP at the last. The wicket was really amazing to bat on. Typical Mumbai wicket, and the ball was coming nicely onto the bat with bounce. (On when they decided to cut loose with the bat) After the over of Hardik, I decided I had to go all-out and not worry about the wicket. (On Suyash Sharma) In this format, wrist-spinner is the main bowler, a wicket-taking bowler. The way he has bowled from the shorter end, it was amazing to see.
