Rajasthan Royals (RR) captain Riyan Parag has been fined INR 12 lakh for maintaining a slow over-rate during the match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL 2025. The game at the ACA Stadium in Guwahati on March 30 saw RR secure a narrow six-run victory, but the team failed to complete their overs within the stipulated time, leading to Parag’s penalty.

Under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, captains are held accountable for their team’s over-rate performance. Since this was RR’s first offence of the season, Parag was fined INR 12 lakh. In previous IPL seasons, repeated offences led to captains facing match suspensions, but a new rule introduced before IPL 2025 has exempted captains from bans, instead imposing demerit points and financial penalties.

Parag became the second captain in IPL 2025 to be penalized for a slow over-rate, following Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya, who was fined after the game against Gujarat Titans. The decision to penalize captains financially rather than suspending them was made during a meeting of team captains in Mumbai on March 20. Under the new rule, captains will receive demerit points for slow over-rate offences, which will be tracked over three years.

RR registers their first win of IPL 2025

Despite the penalty, the Royals put on an impressive performance against CSK, registering their first win of the season. Nitish Rana was the star with the bat, smashing 81 off 36 balls, while Wanindu Hasaranga’s four-wicket haul ensured CSK fell short of the 183-run target. RR’s Sandeep Sharma held his nerve in the final over, dismissing MS Dhoni and restricting CSK to 176/6.

Meanwhile, CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad played a brilliant innings, scoring a half-century, while Ravindra Jadeja’s late cameo gave the former champions hope. However, Parag and his men remained in control for most of the match, with their bowlers executing plans effectively.
