IPL 2025: Virat Kohli completes 400 T20 matches
Virat Kohli is the only player to play for one franchise in the history of IPL.
Indian batting maestro Virat Kohli added another milestone to his illustrious career as he completed 400 T20 matches when he took the field for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the opening match of IPL 2025 at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. With this, Kohli became the first Indian cricketer to achieve the feat of playing 400 T20s, 100 Test matches, and 300 ODIs.
Kohli's T20 career began in April 2007 when he made his debut for Delhi in the Inter-State Twenty20 Tournament. His impressive performances at the domestic level and successful leadership in India's U19 World Cup title-winning campaign earned him an IPL contract with RCB in the inaugural edition of the tournament in 2008. Since then, Kohli has been loyal to the franchise, becoming the only player in IPL history to feature for the same team in every season.
Kohli made his T20 International debut for India in 2010 against Zimbabwe, under the captaincy of Suresh Raina. He has 12886 runs in 399 matches, which includes nine centuries and 97 half-centuries. In T20 Internationals, Kohli scored 4188 runs in 141 matches, including a century and 38 half-centuries. He retired from T20Is after helping India to victory in the T20 World Cup 2024 and is the tournament's all-time leading run-scorer with 1292 runs at an average of 58.72.
In the IPL, Kohli is the highest run-scorer with 8004 runs, including eight centuries. Kohli's 973-run tally in 2016 is a record to this day. In 2025, the 36-year-old will be playing under the leadership of Rajat Patidar.
Notably, he joins Rohit Sharma and Dinesh Karthik as the only Indian cricketers to have played 400 T20 matches. Rohit leads the chart with 448 appearances, while Karthik, who retired after IPL 2024, has featured in 412 games.
