IPL 2025: Why are Shardul Thakur and Mitchell Santner not playing in MI vs LSG Match 45?

Two players from the Mumbai Indians (MI) and a player from Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), who featured for their respective teams in the previous game, will not be featuring in the 45th match of the IPL 2025 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Mitchell Santner and Vignesh Puthur from MI and Shardul Thakur from LSG will be out of action.

MI named the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Raj Bawa, Satyanarayana Raju, Robin Minz, and Reece Topley as their list of players who could be used as impact substitutes in the match. On the other hand, LSG named the likes of David Miller, Shahbaz Ahmed, Himmat Singh, Yuvraj Chaudhary, and Akash Maharaj Singh as the potential impact substitutes.

Toss Update

LSG's skipper, Rishabh Pant, won the toss and opted to bowl first on a sunny afternoon in Mumbai at the Wankhede Stadium. MI's skipper, Hardik Pandya, claimed that he wanted to bowl first too. However, he did not mind batting first under the scorching heat of Mumbai. While LSG had one change in their XI, Mumbai made two changes in their XI despite not losing their last 4 matches.

MI make two changes, Jasprit Bumrah likely to be the Impact player

Mayank Yadav, who has completely recovered from the injury, will be playing his first match of the IPL 2025 for LSG. To accommodate him in the XI, LSG dropped Shardul Thakur, who hasn't been at his best in the last few matches. David Miller could be used as the impact substitute by the Lucknow-based franchise.

Likewise, MI replaced Mitchell Santner with the debutant Corbin Bosch. Similarly, Vignesh Puthur made a way for Karn Sharma in the XI, as confirmed by the MI skipper Hardik after the toss. Jasprit Bumrah could come in as the impact substitute for the 5-time champions.

We are bowling first. In a day game you want to utilize the surface. We are in a good space and personally Its easier to put the team ahead, makes it easier. Eventually you want to play good cricket and take everyday as your first day. One change. Shardul is out and Mayank Yadav is in.

We were planning to bowl, but looking at the heat - we don't mind batting as well. It's about adapting and not think too much about the heat.
