The recently concluded IPL 2023 auction was full of twists and turns. While players who did not participate in the previous edition of the tournament received the highest bids and broke all records, players who were a part of the IPL 2022 faced massive pay cuts. There were also instances where the players, who received amounts in crores last season, were sold at their base prices.

Overseas players Sam Curran, Cameron Green, Ben Stokes, and Harry Brook, who did not participate in the IPL 2022, attracted the highest bid as multiple teams entered a bidding war to get them into their sides. All-rounder Curran became the most expensive player in IPL history after he was signed by Punjab Kings for a hefty INR 18.50 crore.

While these players went for the big bucks, a few saw a drastic decline in their prices compared to their previous season. Romario Shepherd, the tall West Indies cricketer, was sold for a whopping INR 7.75 crore at the IPL 2022 auction to Sunrisers Hyderabad. But he failed to attract big bids this time as he was roped in by Lucknow Super Giants at the base price of INR 50 lakh and ended up getting a 1550% pay cut.

New Zealand’s pace sensation Kyle Jamieson made the headlines during the IPL 2021, when he last participated. He attracted an INR 15 crore deal from the Royal Challengers Bangalore before opting out of the IPL 2022. Upon returning to the league, he was roped in for INR 1 crore, on his base price, by the Chennai Super Kings seeing a pay cut of 1500%.

Another player from the West Indies who attracted a big deal at the IPL 2022 mega auction was Odean Smith, who was roped in by Punjab Kings for INR 6 crore. Even after some fine performances, he was released by the franchise ahead of the IPL 2023 auction. He was then signed by Gujarat Titans at his base price of INR 50 lakh, facing a pay cut of 1200%.

Jhye Richardson represented Punjab Kings in his previous IPL outing, in the year 2021, after he bagged an INR 14 crore deal from the franchise. But at the recent IPL 2023 auction, he could attract only one bidder as Mumbai Indians roped him in at his base price of INR 1.5 crore. As a result, Richardson saw a pay cut of 933.33%.

Murugan Ashwin, who represented Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2022, was bought by the franchise for INR 1.6 crore for the previous edition. But this time, he failed to go big as Rajasthan Royals roped him in at his base price of INR 20 lakh, resulting in a pay cut of 800%.

Speaking of the differences in the players’ fees of the previous IPL season, compared to the upcoming one, a few cricketers saw a huge dip in their salary. Kyle Jamieson incurred a loss of INR 14 crore as his salary dropped down to INR 1 crore, from what was previously INR 15 crore.

Jhye Richardson lost INR 12.25 crore, while former SRH skipper Kane Williamson lost INR 12 crore as his salary dropped to INR 2 crore from what was INR 14 crore last season. Romario Shepherd lost INR 7 crore, while Mayank Agarwal lost INR 5.75 crore as his salary dropped to INR 8.25 crore, from what was previously INR 14 crore.
