IPL: Mumbai Indians record fastest 200 plus run chase in tournament's history
Mumbai achieved the feat against RCB in the 54th match of the IPL 2023
Mumbai Indians hosted the Royal Challengers Bangalore at the Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday, May 9, for the reverse fixture between the two sides. After facing a loss against the Faf du Plessis-led side in their first matchup of this season in Bengaluru, the Rohit Sharma-led side managed to make it 1-1 by defeating RCB at home.
The victory was a special one for the home side as Mumbai Indians jumped to the third spot in the points table as they not only bettered their score, but also their Net Run Rate (NRR). In doing so, Mumbai Indians recorded the fastest 200+ run chase in the history of the Indian Premier League. MI chased down the 200-run target in 16.3 overs, with 21 balls to spare and six wickets in hand.
Speaking of the game, Mumbai Indians got off to a terrific start as Jason Behrendorff managed to send Virat Kohli and Anuj Rawat packing within just three overs into the game. After the early blow, RCB skipper Faf and explosive batter Glenn Maxwell showcased their batting prowess and notched up their respective half-centuries. Later, contributions from Dinesh Karthik, Wanindu Hasaranga and Kedhar Jadhav helped RCB put up 199/6 in 20 overs.
Mumbai Indians were off to a tremendous start as Ishan Kishan unleashed the beast within and notched up a quick-fire 21-ball 42. Hasaranga dismissed him and MI skipper Rohit Sharma in the same over, but thanks to Suryakumar Yadav's heroics, the batting unit was unbothered with the two early blows. While Suryakumar Yadav showcased his vintage self with a 35-ball 83, Nehal Wadhera's 52*(34) kept Mumbai Indians going in the chase.
The duo added 140 runs for the third wicket partnership off just 66 deliveries, before Suryakumar Yadav was dismissed. Before walking back to the pavilion, Suryakumar had done a majority of the job for the five-time champions, and the middle-order batters did not have anything to worry about. Wadhera finished the game off in style by hitting a six, which also helped him get to his half-century as MI clinched an emphatic victory.
