The Indian Premier League (IPL) is one of the biggest sporting spectacles in the world. Right from the playing venues to the TV production, everything is top quality. With every passing year, the fans have been witnessing an upgrading technology of stumps, which has been one of the most striking aesthetics of the cricketing extravaganza.

In the tie between Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals during the match 31 of the seventeenth edition of the IPL, halted played for a few minutes. The reason behind this delay was that the leg-stump had taken a beating, when Trent Boult dismissed Sunil Narine. As a result, the wickets had to be repaired.

In the ongoing edition, the stumps used in the IPL are costing a mind-boggling amount of money. The wickets are costing between a staggering INR 10 to 35 Lakhs, while the bails which are also LED enabled are also priced heavily. The LED bails also cost a whopping INR 40 to 50,000 and is one of the most treasured equipment in the league.

What is the reason behind high cost of stumps used in the IPL?

Ever since franchise cricket and IPL in particular became a huge hit, the need for innovation was also felt. Since T20 cricket is called the Slam-Bang version of the game, its element caters to audience who want to see fast paced-action.

The actual reason behind the high costs of the stumps used in the Indian Premier League is the highly-accurate light sensors being used. Each pair of wickets passes through rigorous checks and quality tests to ensure an error-free operation during an encounter. As a result, the cost skyrockets for producing such export-quality pair of stumps.

The LED Stumps came into effect to give T20 cricket a more special feel as far as the show business is concerned. The old dark bails were replaced by the LED bails, just to help the viewer as well as the 3rd umpire to judge a close stumping or run-out call.

Last year, Arshdeep Singh broke the stumps during the Punjab Kings versus Mumbai Indians game at the Wankhede Stadium. It was then that the actual cost of the wickets and the bails came to light.

Since the introduction of this new age feature has come into effect, the decision-making his become easier for the umpires. The close stumping calls are no longer debated as the accuracy has become higher with the LED feature making things better.

The IPL has seen many new features and rules come into place, but the introduction of the LED Stumps has been the best. Even the fans love to watch the stumps light up as soon the ball makes contact with it. This latest addition has brought a different experience for the people who are enjoying IPL action from the comforts of their homes.
