Ireland Women’s team is all set to travel to Pakistan for the very first time in their cricket history. The tour will be part of the ICC Women’s championship as the teams will clash for three ODIs in the month of November and will then go on to play three T20Is to conclude the series. In a statement released by the Pakistan Board, it has been confirmed that all the matches will be played at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.
Post announcement of the Ireland tour, Tania Mallick, Head of Women's Cricket in Pakistan, said that a new era is starting as Pakistan will soon launch their league in women’s cricket.
“We had a great experience of hosting Sri Lanka earlier this year in Karachi and are now excited to host Ireland here at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. This is just a beginning of a new era in women’s cricket, after hosting Ireland we are looking forward to organising the women’s league soon,” Tania said in a video.
“We want fans to come to the ground and support women’s cricket for what promises to be exciting six days of cricket in Lahore,” she added.
We are eager to perform in front of our home crowd: Captain Bismah Maroof
It was not long ago when international teams backed off from coming to Pakistan due to security reasons. However, things have changed in the past year and Australia, West Indies and England have toured the nation in the recent past. Interestingly, other than West Indies, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, no other women’s team have travelled to Pakistan in the last five years. Thus, Pakistan captain Bismah Maroof is very excited to once again perform in front of the home crowd.
“We are all up for an exciting series against Ireland. The series will help us in attracting new fans to the women’s game. The series will provide an opportunity for young cricketers to upskill themselves as per the demands of international cricket. We are eager to perform in front of our home crowd and win crucial ICC Women’s Championship points as qualifying directly for the next ODI World Cup is one of our main targets,” the skipper said.
