Ireland Women's team set to make change due to an injury ahead of ICC Women's T20 World Cup

Ireland Women's team was all set to begin their preparations for the Women's T20 World Cup but an injury in their squad has forced them to make a change.

The Women's T20 World Cup is one of the biggest cricket tournaments that fans can look forward to in this amazing year full of cricket. The tournament is set to begin later this month, where ten of the best teams from around the world are going to compete for the coveted title.

Ireland Women's team is set to begin their campaign on February 13, 2023, against their arch-rivals and neighbour, England. They have already started their preparations but they suffered a setback as their middle-order batter, Rebecca Stockell has been ruled out of the tournament.

A medical assessment was conducted and it was confirmed that Stockwell has been ruled out. Meanwhile, the experienced all-rounder, Rachel Delaney has been named as her replacement. Carrie Archer, the National Team Selector said, "We are all devastated for Rebecca and wish her a speedy recovery." 

Notably, Stokell who starred with the bat with handy cameos for Ireland women in the semi finals of the qualifier tournament against Zimbabwe in Abu Dhabi.

Carrie then spoke about Rachel Delaney and her experience. She added, "Rachel Delaney has been called up – an experienced all-rounder, who has been part of recent senior squads. We wish Rachel well as she flies out to join the Irish camp.”

Ireland is in the group with big teams like India, West Indies, Pakistan and England. It would be a gigantic ask from them to qualify from this group but would be looking to fight in every match in the hope of an upset. Ireland would also be playing warm-up matches against Sri Lanka and Australia to prepare for the tournament. 

Updated Ireland squad: Laura Delany (captain), Georgina Dempsey, Amy Hunter, Shauna Kavanagh, Arlene Kelly, Gaby Lewis, Louise Little, Sophie MacMahon, Jane Maguire, Cara Murray, Leah Paul, Orla Prendergast, Eimear Richardson, Mary Waldron and Rachel Delaney.
