Former Australian cricketer Stuart Law has voted for Ireland and Zimbabwe among the less-fancied nations who have been quite impressive so far in the T20 World Cup 2022. Ireland crawled their way back into the tournament with a fantastic run-chase against Scotland in the qualifiers and followed it up by an upset of a win over West Indies to make it to the Super 12.
In Round two, Ireland came in with high spirits against a power-packed England side and went on to register a historic victory through the DLS method. On the other hand, Zimbabwe played their heart out in the qualifiers and their positive intent in the Super 12 was visible in the rain-shortened game against South Africa. They went one step further by claiming a thrilling one-run victory against a star-studded Pakistan side to record another huge upset.
It would be a huge achievement if they can cause some upsets: Stuart Law
Law mentioned that it is not easy to do what Ireland and Zimbabwe have done courtesy of their massive efforts. He said that the two teams might not reach the knockouts but can cause few more upsets.
“The game of cricket doesn’t always allow you to go there and beat a powerhouse. But Ireland and Zimbabwe have shown that can be possible. Whether they can maintain that to go right through and collect the big prize remains to be seen. It would be great to see that [semi-final qualification] happen but realistically, your heart wants that to happen while your head just knows that can’t happen,” Stuart Law told on 'BatBricks7 presents Run Ki Runneeti' show on CricTracker.
Law also said that Zimbabwe has a good bowling attack for Australian conditions, which was evident in the previous game when they defended 130 against Pakistan.
“If anyone can [qualify for the semi-finals], I think Ireland has got a very good chance and Zimbabwe [as they] have a very good bowling attack for Australian conditions. So, those two would be the two standouts from the lesser nations to go far. But I don’t think they will win it but if they can cause some upsets ahead of the semi-final, that would be a huge achievement,“ he added.
