‘Is there no accountability?’ - Sunil Gavaskar lambasts selectors for not questioning Rohit Sharma after WTC final loss

After an embarrassing defeat at the hands of Australia in the finals of the World Test Championship, Rohit Sharma’s position as the leader in the longest format of the game has come under some threat. However, the selectors and the team management have shown enough faith in the 36-year-old as he has been retained as the Test skipper for the two-match series against the West Indies.

Meanwhile, after the announcement was made, former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar expressed his disappointment saying that the BCCI selectors should have had a word with Rohit regarding his future in the longest format. Gavaskar pointed out that Rohit should have taken some accountability but that has not been the case as the team lost by 209 runs.

“I want to ask is there no accountability? Did you held a meeting after the WTC final where you would have discussed the appointment of a captain? In our days, there used to be a selection meeting where captain was appointed and then two days later, he was asked to join the selection meeting. Captain didn’t have voting right, he was a co-opted member, can ask if he needs bowler, spinner, extra batter,” Gavaskar told Sports Tak.

Gavaskar went on add that even if an Indian captain fails to deliver, he is never dropped or changed and that needs to change. He cited examples from his era and added that it wasn’t the case in the 80s or 90s.

“But this hasn’t been happening in our cricket for the past 10-12 years. A captain once appointed, isn’t changed no matter if they continue losing series after series. As long as individual performance is good, captaincy remains," he said.

"If there was a strong selector, he would have asked questions regarding why Ashwin wasn’t selected, why the chose to field first, why there was a delay in using short ball tactic against Travis Head. These questions are necessary. You can keep them as captain even after that but the accountability must be there," Gavaskar added.
