There was a lot of hype surrounding Match 52 between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) held at the Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday, May 3 and the game lived up to it. There was a threat of rain looming in the lead up to it but what actually rained on the day were runs from both sides.
CSK won the toss and put RCB in. The home team scored a competitive 213 on the back of Virat Kohli's 62 and Romario Shepherd's whirlwind 53 off 14 balls. CSK began well but suffered a couple of hiccups later in the powerplay. Ayush Mhatre (94 off 48) and Ravindra Jadeja (77* off 45) looked as if they would take CSK home. But there were twists and turns in store with the last over requiring CSK to score 15 runs to win their third match of the season.
RCB pacer Yash Dayal was given the responsibility to bowl the all-important over and the left-armer did not disappoint. He bowled two full tosses on middle and leg which only yielded two runs in total for CSK off the first two balls. With 13 runs needed off four balls, he bowled another low full toss trapping MS Dhoni leg before. The next ball was a high full toss to Shivam Dube who smashed it into the stands over deep midwicket. Adding salt to injury, it was a no-ball for height. The equation changed completely and CSK had more than a sniff at victory. Dayal came back well and conceded only singles off the remaining three balls, delivering a two-run victory to the home team.
RCB batting coach Dinesh Karthik was full of praise for the Uttar Pradesh bowler. He felt that it was a really difficult task for the bowler to defend those number of runs and it was a brilliant effort in the end. Karthik also lauded Dayal's work ethic and highlighted the meticulousness of the bowler when it comes to preparation.
“We knew it’ll take a humongous effort to stop them scoring from the runs that were left in the last over. But Yash being Yash, the way he delivered, it was outstanding. I think it was a very good team effort. Sometimes these kind of games really uplift the mood and we’re very happy with how it transpired today," said Karthik to the broadcasters after the match.
"The one thing that you see with the young crop of cricketers is how much they work hard at their cricket behind the scenes. Yash is again someone who’s very diligent. He comes to bowling meetings with a paper and will write down everything and later try to implement it in on the field,” added Karthik.
Dayal always knows what to do: Karthik
Karthik also talked about the execution of Dayal and revealed that effort is one thing that he never shies away from giving.
“Yes, the execution could be up and down with him at times. But the one thing that you get, not get less from his effort. He always knows what to do. And when he’s able to deliver his yorkers, he feels so good about himself. And that’s one of the reasons why we retained him- because he’s got a special skill. And he’s someone who can handle pressure well. Same game, one year ago, he did it for us. And yet again today, he did a nice job for us," concluded Karthik.
