‘It was the right decision’ - Heather Knight accepts mistake after not shaking hands with officials
"It was the right decision by the umpires, I was really in the zone to try and win us that game, and obviously frustrated that we were going off," Knight said.
England women’s skipper Heather Knight recently caught headlines after he chose not to shake the hands of the umpires after England women’s defeat against Australia women in the second T20I of the Women’s Ashes 2025. The game situation read that England women required 18 runs off five balls but they were six runs behind the DLS par score. Australia were declared the winner.
The officials were seen informing skippers, Heather Knight and Tahlia McGrath. However, while Knight shook hands with the Aussie skipper, she did not do the same with the match officials. Her act was branded as disrespectful by users on social media as well.
Knight had believed that England women had a genuine chance to pull off the run chase against Australian women. She was unbeaten on a score of 43 runs in 19 deliveries when rain played spoilsport. However, after the dust had cleared, the England skipper came forward and admitted that the umpires had made the right decision.
"It was the right decision by the umpires, I was really in the zone to try and win us that game, and obviously frustrated that we were going off, but it wasn't at the umpires at all. It was pretty wet, even when we were running it felt pretty slippy and it was quite hard to attack those twos. So yeah, it was the right decision, 100 per cent,” Heather Knight was quoted as saying by the Hindustan Times.
It was brilliant game of cricket: Knight
Furthermore, Heather Knight stated that it was a brilliant game of cricket and that she was feeling like she could have propelled her side to a win if the rain had not played spoilsport.
"It was a brilliant game of cricket. I felt like I could get us over the line. I felt really set, and I had some really good boundary options on a very good cricket wicket. It was an awesome crowd, and they deserved a finish, and you could hear the frustration from the fans that we were going off, and the game wasn't able to reach its conclusion,” she said.
