'It will be tough to look back on' - Ben Stokes rues missed opportunity to level series in rain-marred fourth Test

The fourth Test of the Ashes 2023 came to an anticlimactic end as the rain forced the game to end in a draw. Australia were at 214/5 trailing by 61 runs in the second innings giving England hopes of levelling the series. However, rain gods spoiled their party as relentless downpour couldn’t allow a single ball to be bowled on Day 5. As a result, Australia retained the Ashes being 2-1 ahead in the series, since they won the last edition in 2021-22 as well.

Following the disappointing end to the fourth Test, England captain Ben Stokes was asked whether losing the first two Tests of the series was a bigger disappointment than the rain forcing a draw in the fourth game. Notably, Australia won the first two Tests by two wickets and 43 runs, respectively, to gain an upper hand over the hosts.

Replying to the journalist’s question, Stokes came up with a rather straightforward answer. The all-rounder believes that was not the case and even though it will be tough to ponder back about it. However, his team will surely look ahead and play for the ultimate pride that they believe in.

“No, not really,” the 32-year-old darted back at the journalist in concern with a blank face.

Further reflecting back on the game, the England skipper stated that it will be a tough game to look back and they will look to draw the series like in 2019.

“Coming into the game, knowing what we needed to do, played into our hands a little bit. It was another do-or-die game for us. It will be tough to look back on but there is one more game to go and we'll be trying to tie the series and a lot of pride to play for. We want to draw the series like in 2019,” he added.

England eager to maintain their unbeaten record against Australia at home

Notably, the last Ashes series in England played in 2019 ended in a draw (2-2). The Three Lions have maintained their unbeaten record against Australia at home since 2001. On the other hand, Australia will be eager to get one step ahead and win the series this time around ending their 22-year-long Ashes series-win drought in England.

The two teams will begin the final chapter of Ashes 2023 as they lock horns in the fifth Test on Thursday, July 27, at the Kennington Oval, in London.
