Andy Flower recently praised the freshly-appointed head coach of the Indian team, ex-cricketer, Gautam Gambhir, after they clinched their first T20I series under him. The tour of Sri Lanka marked Gambhir's inaugural assignment with the cricketing juggernaut.

Flower highlighted that Gambhir possessed several qualities essential for a triumphant coach. He then posed a rhetorical question, which was indeed accurate, regarding Gambhir's limited coaching experience. The former Zimbabwean great further remarked that Gambhir was not a conventional coach, and it would be more fitting to describe him as an "inspirational leader" rather than a "coach."

“He's certainly got some of the characteristics of a successful coach. He hasn't really coached, though, has he? He is not your conventional coach. It would probably be better to describe him as an inspirational leader than a coach. That might be more accurate,” stated Flower, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

Followers or teams like to trust that their leader has the courage of his convictions: Flower

The head coach of the Royal Challengers Bangalore further observed that Gambhir exhibited a profound self-belief and an unwavering dedication to his doctrines. Flower noted that Gambhir's courage to adhere to his convictions would likely motivate those around him to follow his lead. He also described Gambhir as a person brimming with strong opinions and a clear vision for his goals, one who was more than willing to make the tough calls. Flower elaborated that Gambhir harboured a well-defined vision for the style of cricket he envisioned for his team, ensuring transparency and purpose.

"He's a guy that has the conviction and courage of his own beliefs and principles that will allow other people to really want to follow him. Followers or teams like to trust that their leader has the courage of his convictions. And GG definitely has that. He has strong opinions. He knows where he wants to go. He's willing to make tough decisions. He will have a very clear idea of the type of cricket that he wants his teams to play," added Flower.

Although Gambhir may not possess the extensive resume many international coaches boast, he embodies an unyielding attitude and a latent hunger for devising and executing strategies effectively. These attributes could very well be the essential components the Indian team needs to enhance their capabilities as they move forward from the successful T20I leg of their ongoing tour of Sri Lanka.
