Team India kicked off its two-game Test series against South Africa by taking them on at the SuperSport Park in Centurion from December 26. Batting first after losing the toss, the visitors found themselves in a spot of bother as the top order crumbled.

After the likes of Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Shubman Gill failed to go big, it was the knock of KL Rahul that provided the Indian innings some stability. Scoring an unbeaten knock of 70 runs in 105 deliveries, Rahul’s knock helped the side post 208 runs with the loss of eight wickets on Day 1 of the first Test.

Lauding his brilliant innings, former India cricketer Aakash Chopra came forward and opined that it was Rahul’s knock that propelled India to a decent total on Day 1 of the clash. He also branded his knock as the saving grace for the visitors.

"He (KL Rahul) has been the saving grace thus far. With the runs he scored and the way he farmed the strike, he took India to a decent total. It's a fighting total. I am not saying that you are out of the woods," Aakash Chopra said on his YouTube channel.

The world keeps hounding him: Chopra

Furthermore, Aakash Chopra also opined that the cricket community’s opinion of KL Rahul is not wrong and that the world looks down on him too often, which is something that he does not deserve.

"Rahul scored a fifty while batting at No. 6. He scored runs in the first game last time (India's previous tour of South Africa) as well; I think it was the Boxing Day Test only. He has scored runs in England, he has scored runs in Australia, he has scored runs everywhere, but the world keeps hounding him," Chopra said.

"People say he has come through recommendation. I am not saying that. I say he is extremely talented. Even public spats have happened on this topic but he is versatile. How many players have done well while opening in Test cricket and then play in the middle order and keep as well?” he added.
