It's definitely a possibility that it's my last ICC tournament: Rassie Van der Dussen

Rassie van der Dussen accepts that the Champions Trophy 2025 could be his last ICC tournament as South Africa moves ahead towards a younger and new talent generation of players. The 36-year-old top-order batter has been a pillar at No. 3 in the ODI format, which leads him to understand the importance and competition to get the spots. 

"It's definitely a possibility that it's my last ICC tournament, I’m not saying I’ll step away, but the reality is that younger guys are pushing through", van der Dussen explained in Karachi ahead of South Africa’s final group-stage match against England.

With talents like Tony de Zorzi, Ryan Rickelton and Tristan Stubbs coming up, he remains aware that his place isn’t assured. "If I don’t perform, someone will take my spot. I certainly don’t expect preferential treatment," he said.  

However, dependable since 2019, van der Dussen’s recent form has been in stake, with just one half-century in his last 11 innings before his 52 against Afghanistan. With Heinrich Klaasen fit and back in form, his spot is seen to be at risk.   

Looking forward, van der Dussen’s national contract tends to end in April, and analysis with coach Rob Walter and director Enoch Nkwe will regulate his journey ahead. "Physically, I’m putting in the work. If I’m still good enough, I’d love to stay in the mix. If not, that’s fine too," he added.  

Unlike some senior cricketers choosing to play in T20 leagues, he remains obligated to the Proteas. "Representing my country has always been my ultimate goal. If I get another contract, I’ll take it."  

He hopes to help transition the team, even if he doesn’t come to be a part of the 2027 ODI World Cup. "Being here is the ultimate thing for me. Leagues are nice, but they’re not my be-all and end-all."  

As South Africa set to face England on March 1, van der Dussen remains focused. "We don’t need extra motivation to play England."
