It’s irritating when people who haven’t faced 150 kmph delivery advising you: Shreyas Iyer
Star Indian batter Shreyas Iyer has often been told about his issues with short-pitched deliveries.
Star Indian batter Shreyas Iyer recently expressed his frustration at the uninvited advice he often receives regarding his batting technique, particularly against short-pitched deliveries. Iyer has been a key middle-order batter for the national side, especially during the 2023 ODI World Cup. Scoring 530 runs in 11 innings at an average of 66.25, including two centuries and three fifties, Iyer silenced critics with his consistency.
Yet, the chatter around his perceived weakness against rapid pace and short balls has remained. Iyer stated this as irritating and revealed that people who haven't faced deliveries at this pace don't have the right to say it to the player directly.
“It’s irritating, especially when it comes from people, who haven’t faced 150 km per hour delivery, advising you to play in a particular way. But I would say it is their opinion. They have all the right to talk, but they can talk between themselves not to the player directly," Iyer told as quoted by The Indian Express.
Don’t want to listen to what’s happening: Shreyas Iyer
Despite the outside noise, Iyer has remained focused on improving his game. Drawing inspiration from unconventional sources, he has been studying baseball techniques to enhance his power-hitting skills.
“Yes, I have seen a lot of videos on YouTube on how you basically get the shoulder and hip separation. That has helped me a lot in terms of power-hitting. It plays a vital role, especially in T20s where you switch your gears and try to accelerate at any given point," he added.
Meanwhile, the Mumbai batter reportedly skipped a domestic match for his home state, leading to his exclusion from the BCCI’s annual contract list for 2024-25. However, Punjab Kings acquired him for a whopping INR 26.75 crore in the IPL 2025 auction, making him the second-most expensive player in league history.
“During the auction, we were in Hyderabad, watching it from our rooms and I was expecting a good amount. But I never thought that I would exceed a point and there would be so much competition between two teams over me. Overall, I was thrilled. After a certain point, I shut the door, went into the washroom and I was like, I don’t want to listen to what’s happening," he concluded.
The right-hand batter has been picked in India's 15-member squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Dubai and will also feature in the three-match ODI series against England ahead of the marquee event.
