'It's like a golf swing' - Allan Donald dissects Jasprit Bumrah's bowling action

Indian speedster Jasprit Bumrah has made a roaring comeback in international after being ruled out of action for 11 months since September 2022 due to a back injury. Ever since his return, Bumrah has looked at his usual best as he finished as the fourth-highest wicket-taker of the ODI World Cup 2023 with 20 wickets from 11 innings at an average of 18.65 and an economy of 4.06.

The 30-year-old further finished as the leading wicket-taker of the recently concluded two-match Test series against South Africa picking 12 wickets from three innings. Recently, legendary South African fast bowler Allan Donald compared the Indian speedster’s unique bowling action to a ‘golf swing’ as he goes hard in the last ten metres of his sprint.

“It's a bit of a stutter. But when it actually comes to that last few 10 metres of sprint, he is hard. And all of a sudden, he has hit rhythm for the first time. And then, of course, the late release is quite incredible. But in a way, it's like a golf swing. You can have the worst swing in the world, but the last foot all the way down towards the ball and you are smashing it 350 every single time. No one’s going to care. And that's exactly what good Bumrah does. It gets done,” Allan Donald was quoted as saying by Sportstar.

Further speaking ahead, the former fast bowler delved deep into Pandya’s bowling action and stated that he puts his body through a lot every single delivery.

"Look, I think Hardik puts his body through a lot every single delivery. I mean, it's not a nice thing and also one needs to look at how strong these guys are these days. Hardik has spent a lot of time away from the game, building his body back up. And strength and conditioning is a major, major factor these days,” he added.

Notably, Pandya has been out of action ever since suffering an ankle injury during the ODI World Cup 2023 fixture against Bangladesh in Pune. His return to the cricket pitch is still unknown as he’s undergoing rehabilitation to get himself ready for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024.  It’s not the first time that the 30-year-old has gone through a major injury as he also had to go through surgery in 2020 for his recurring back injury.
