Former Australia cricketer Glenn McGrath believes Ben Stokes-led England can overcome the visitors on Day 4 of the third Ashes Test at Headingley. Notably, Australia have already taken a 2-0 lead in the five-game series and are one win away from retaining the prestigious urn.
Notably, Stokes and Co. required another 224 runs to make it 2-1 in the five-match series, as they were 27/0 at stumps on a rain-soaked Day 3. Earlier, England bundled Australia out for 224 in the third innings of the match.
McGrath reckoned that the hosts will have a tendency to score quickly, which Australia should have foreseen. The overhead circumstances, according to the 53-year-old, will play a significant role on Day 4, and the pitch has the potential to provide ten chances for Australia. He noted that the visitors can easily win the game, but he backed England to win the third Test.
"The thing is, they score so quickly, so Australia need to be on their game first thing tomorrow, see what the overhead conditions are going to be like. I think that'll probably play a big part in what happens, but there's still enough in this pitch for the Australians," McGrath told BBC Sport's Test Match Daily.
"If we get enough balls in the right area, I think we can create 10 chances. The fact that they put on 54 for the last two (wickets) was a bit of a bonus – 250, it's there for Australia, but the way England bat, they love chasing, it's theirs for the taking,” the former legendary pacer further added.
They're a good chasing side, they know how to do it: Vaughan
Former England captain Michael Vaughan believes the hosts should be confident of chasing down the target, citing their previous year's performance. The 48-year-old hoped that the weather forecast for Day 4 won't be cloudy and that Ben Stokes and Co. will comfortably win the game unless something unpredictable occurs.
"England should have enough. In the last year, they've chased a total like this and more four times, so they're a good chasing side. They know how to do it. Australia will be hoping that the clouds are around. I don't think the forecast is for too many clouds. I think there'll be a bit of blue sky. Unless England make a lot of mistakes, and they have that in them too, I think they're going to have enough to chase down this target," Vaughan said.
